The gentle, thoughtful, and sensitive Losey and the mean, base, and vicious Deming are two radically contrasting American soldiers who desert their platoons during the final days of World War II. The pair stumble across a ragtag group of orphans who have been trainedruthless killers. The two soldiers, the orphans, and the two adults who servesurrogate parents to the children are forced to make a desperate stand against a Nazi tank battalion who have them trapped inside an old crumbling building. This movie is pathetic. Not only the fact that one of the soldiers begins to rape an old lady grossed me out, also the whole story about the army of mentally/physically challenged children. And when I say it grosses me out, I am definitely not meaning the actual look of her body or the way the children are presented, no I am really worried about the idea that is behind all that. What&#39;s the statement? I couldn&#39;t find one, so i guess this movie is all about entertaining the audience. I can&#39;t see anyone being actually entertained by whatever is happening in this movie. If anyone is reading this and feeling the way I am i would appreciate it if you let me/us know. I am aware of the way some anti war movies work, and the way producers confront their audience with human behavior. But &quot;Straight Into Darkness&quot; certainly does not deal with a topic like war crimes in a proper way, so it really shouldn&#39;t deal with it at all. If you decide to watch this movie, be prepared to wonder what the **** is wrong with Jeff Burr. The Orphanage meets Private Ryan. This is certainly a different type of WWII film. Not your daddy&#39;s tale of bravery.<br/><br/>But, it is just what you would expect from writer/director Jeff Burr, who gave us Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, Puppet Master 4 &amp; 5, and Pumpkinhead II. A slightly bizarre twist on the usual WWII story.<br/><br/>Two deserters, Ryan Francis and Scott MacDonald, come upon a group of orphans that have mental and physical handicaps. The man and woman who ran the orphanage before the war trained them to fight. Deming (MacDonald) is a real sleaze, who tries to rape the woman despite her obvious scars. They are attacked by 60 Germans who are after treasure in the building where they are holed up.<br/><br/>The story is a mixture of strange and tender amidst the horrors of war. There is enough of Burr&#39;s past work to keep horror fans interested, but there is a beauty underneath, if you look for it.<br/><br/>Check it out for a different take on war.
